Frederick herded the cattle on unfenced prairie during the warm
season and in winter spent his time mostly with his books in the district
school. On November 6, 1857 about noon, the house caught fire from
a defective flue, and its entire contents, with the exception of one bed, was
destroyed. Frederick married Martha Fleshman February 19, 1860 in Livingston
County. She was born January 25, 1843 in Vermillion County, IN and died July 9,
1924 in Streator. Martha was the daughter of William Fleshman and Sarah
Charley. Frederick and Martha remained on the Hoobler family farm until
the spring of 1872. Desiring a change of location and occupation,
Frederick and his family moved to Blackstone in Sunbury Township, Livingston
County and operated a general store. They remained there for two years,
after which they moved to Champaign County, IL where he became a dealer in grain
and provisions. This move was mainly for the benefit of his children, as
he desired to give them the advantages of the schools in that county. They
later moved back to Newtown Township in Livingston County. Frederick was a prominent well-to-do citizen, who enjoyed the
confidence and esteem of the whole community. He was largely engaged in
general farming and raising of stock on a fine 250 acres farm of good land.
In addition to the dwelling, there were also all the other buildings required
for the various purposes of a progressive farmer. The family moved to Streator about 1890 in the neighboring county
